Maxine Refahórana, a.k.a. refa (formally Maxine R.C), is a Melbourne-based musician and teacher who has been composing and producing music since 2010. She founded Musique Étrange in 2024..., and is also the founder, bassist and vocalist of BLUT UND LÄRM. Her work is known for her innovative approach to composition and sound-design, where she explores unconventional methods to sound-design and uses unconventional objects as instruments, pushing the boundaries of traditional music composition. As well as her musical endeavours, Refahórana is an aspiring educator, passionate about sharing her knowledge and love for music with others. Her dedication to music education is evident in her work and performances. Essentially, she is supremely hyper-fixated with music education. Her talent and creativity was recognised in the music community in 2023, where she was awarded 2nd place in the prestigious Allan Zavod Performers’ Award at Monash University, showcasing their exceptional musical abilities. Alongside this achievement, she has performed with other musicians and ensembles, such as the Decibel New Music Ensemble at Tempo Rubato (2024), Hear the Machine (2025), and as of late, with highly-regarded cellist Xiao Xiao (2026). With her distinctive sound and passion for music experimentation, Refahórana continues to captivate audiences and inspire fellow musicians. Her music is a testament to her creativity, innovation, and dedication to the art of sound.
